#19 Unripened Banana!

Wed 05 April 2006

Last Adventure's yellow was still pretty strong so we had to work with what we had. To get around this - more yellow!
Products used:
Manic Panic Electric Banana
Directions Spring Green
Sectioning Clips
Gloves
Tint Brush

Oh look, it's that t-shirt again.
Here's a lovely shot of Adam (one for the fan club). You can see how his last Adventure faded. The yellow had faded a bit and most of the Flamingo had gone leaving it looking almost blond. Still, it's too yellow to do anything blue based. Blue would go greenish and purple would go brown. Red seemed too similar to the last Adventure so we decided on green.

Aaw Adam poses for a photo. His hair is faded out yellow.

To mask the hair underneath from the green I was about to apply I used sectioning clips. Starting at the crown I took thin sections of hair horizontally. Just thick enough so that the clip would stay in without sliding out. On each section I put 1 clip about 1/3 of the way down his hair and then another clip 1/3 after that. On one or two pieces I used three clips. I did several rows like this until I reached the front of his hair, and repeated in the other direction until I reached his neck. At the sides I took horizontal sections and worked downwards.

This photo illustrates how the clips were applied. It also shows what happens if you let bleach get on metal. Oops.

The next photo shows how the dye was applied. We used a tint brush so a nice straight line could be achieved. You can see how the clip is masking out the dye. Sometimes I left a space next to the clip so that more yellow would show through.
Once the dye had been applied to all the sections we rinsed it out carefully (with the clips still in).

After the fresh coat of green we noticed the yellow was looking distinctly blond so I applied more Electric Banana all over to brighten it up. Next photo shows the results.

Clips were applied to thin sections of his hair.

Here's the finished colour. To do the flattened spikes thing I first blow dried Adam's hair. That's really important when you're spiking. Any dampness in the hair makes it flop and dilutes the gel.
After blow drying I started at his crown with a small flat piece of hair about 1 inch wide. I applied a small amount of gel at the last 1/4 of the piece of hair to form the point and laid the hair forward. I repeated this around his crown allowing the hair to fall to whichever side it falls to naturally, creating a kind of halo effect. From there I kept working out towards the edge of his hairline grabbing similar sized chunks of hair and applying gel to the tips. If the hair is a bit out of control you can smooth the length of each chunk with a small amount of gel between your fingers.
To finish I used some hair spray to keep it in place.

Looks like an unripe banana. Adam's hair has been styled in downward spikes.
