#20 Experimental Red & Purple

Wed 27 September 2006

It had been so long since Adam's last hairdo that it had pretty much faded out to blond. It almost looks natural in this first picture and that just wouldn't do!
Products used:
Special Effects Blue Mayhem
Directions Bright Daffodil
Directions Rose Red
Gloves
Tint Brush

It looks wrong for Adam to have normal hair. Here's a shot of his hair taken 3 days before. As you can see there's only the slightest hint of pink there and his hair as gotten quite long again.

Firstly I took a bit of length of the back of his hair to give it more shape. I also sliced into the top part of his hair so that it would sit better when left natural. Adam seems to have an aversion to styling his own hair so I gave him a cut that would look ok without any styling products. He had a bit of regrowth which we bleached out to match the rest of his hair.

I wanted to use a peachy pink shade on the roots out of leftovers I had lying around. I used Directions Rose Red and added some conditioner to lighten it up. It was quite a cool toned pink so I added some Bright Daffodil to warm it up and add the kind of orangeness required for a peach shade. It came out a bit more vibrant than expected (I ran out of conditioner to lighten it up).
I applied this to Adam's roots in the same way you would apply bleach to your regrowth. I started by parting his hair down the middle from forehead to neck and also across from ear to ear. I then took small diagonal sections on each of these triangles and painted the dye onto the roots with a tint brush.

When that was finished I started applying a blue shade. I was thinking of using Special Effects Purple Smoke but next to the vibrant pink shade it looked kind of washed out where it would not normally so we had a change of plan and used some Blue Mayhem and mixed a small amount of Rose Red in there to give it some coherence. This produced a gorgeous deep violet colour. I used my fingers to apply this to the tips of his hair.
In order to get a nice gradient between the two colours I mixed up a third shade which was a combination of Rose Red and Blue Mayhem in a ratio of about 80:20. You can see the 3 colours as they looked mixed in the bowls.
The last colour was applied to his midlengths and lightly brushed through into the other colours for a smooth blend.

Dye has been applied to the roots and tips.

And here's how it turned out. The first picture here shows his hair after it's been blow dried. I dried it completely and blow dried upwards so his hair would have extra fluff for styling. Next I rubbed some styling cream through my hands and grabbed chunks of his hair and pulled them upwards to give him this crazy style.

The pinkish red fades into purplish blue

Adam's hair has been styled upwards to show off the colours.
