Trends is a new part of the site where I discuss what hair colours and styles are becoming a popular trend.
Has anyone else noticed the increasing number of questions about going silver recently? It's always been a popular colour but it seems it's getting more and more popular these days.
Having had my hair silver in 2002 I can see the attraction - it's something different from the normal range of unnatural colours, if you can call them normal, but unlike reds and pinks which can be applied to golden blond hair silver is a much more difficult colour to attain and maintain.
Here's a typical example of what you have to go through to get silver:
Bleach the hell out of your hair, possibly 2 processes to get to very pale blond.
Now either you'll apply a toner which will give a platinum silver or you'll mix up some professional dyes. 3 different colours are required for a good silver (see Going White/Silver) and because it's a permanent dye further damage is likely.
Now assuming that worked right, and believe me silver is difficult to do well, you now have to maintain it. What does that involve? Primarily lots of retouches. Silver being a pale colour washes out in a week or two if you've used a toner so it needs recoloured often. As well as that a blue based shampoo can be useful for keeping the yellowness at bay. On top of that a day out in the sun can turn you completely blond so retouches might be even more frequent. To keep it in good condition you're going to need to use a deep conditioner once a week. When mine was silver I always used a conditioner with some blue dye in it which helped.
And then the roots grow in. I think dark roots look great with silver hair and actually make it look more silvery but there comes a time when the roots are just too long to ignore and you have to go through the whole ordeal again. Not only that, you now have to match the bleached roots to the already bleached hair. The regrowth has to be bleached to perfection or any uneven colour is going to look hideous.
Done well silver can look amazing but it's possibly the worst when something goes wrong. Not only do you risk a lot of damaged hair bleaching and dyeing with a permanent, but when it's applied to hair that hasn't been lightened enough the result is an awful muddy green blond.
So is it really worth the hassle? I think yes if you know what you're doing but it's no wonder people have problems with silver.
