My thoughts

This Adventure combines two of my favourite colour combos of bright yellow with turquoise and bright yellow with purple, and because the colours are in order of the colour spectrum (yellow-green-blue-purple) it’s almost guaranteed they’ll look good together.

Ideally I would have cut Adam’s hair before colouring it so that some of the purple wasn’t lost but I wasn’t expecting to have time to cut his hair. I like the effect that having more colour on the longer hair gives, so all in all, cutting it afterwards was a good mistake as far as I’m concerned.

But who wants to read my thoughts when you can hear Adam’s “My Thoughts”! Check out the video!

#30 Fluorescent Yellow, Blue and Purple

Tue 27 April 2010

Time again for another cut and colour! Adam’s hair was almost completely free from colour so this was an easy base to start work on. Since it’s turning sunny now we decided to go for something really bright!

Here’s what you’ll need if you want to recreate the look:

  • Directions Fluorescent Glow
  • Directions Atlantic Blue
  • Directions Plum
  • A tint brush
  • Sectioning clips or other clamping type clips
  • Foil (I used hairdressing foil but since no developer is used here you could use normal kitchen foil)

You can see from the first photograph (below) that his hair almost looks as though it’s just been bleached. His hair is in pretty bad condition because he never brushes or conditions it so I decided not to do any bleaching, especially since the roots aren’t too visible.

I know, I have a bit of an obsession with Directions Fluorescent Glow but since Adam can pull off the highlighter look I decided to use it again. It’s a fun colour to work with.

If you’re lazy, you can stop reading now and watch the shiny new video below where I’ve explained it all in 5 easy steps, including Adam doing a piece to camera on his new hair! For more detailed instructions and tips, read on.

Since Fluorescent Glow is easily contaminated by other colours, this time I was more careful about other colours spoiling the shade, so I sectioned off the bottom section of his hair and clipped the rest out of the way. Then I applied Fluorescent Glow in the usual manner with a tint brush. Because I intended to overlap the next colour, I applied the yellow to about half way down the length of his hair.

Adam's hair is almost blonde and the last colours have completely washed out.

Next, with a fresh tint brush, I applied Atlantic Blue to the remaining hair and blended it up into the Fluorescent Glow to create a yellow-green-blue gradient.

The plan was to add black stripes in a Racoon Tail style in the hope of emphasising the colour but at this point I changed my mind about it. I decided that knowing Adam’s hair, it would probably look like a big dull coloured mess unless styled properly. Instead I applied some Directions Plum to the tips to add some vibrancy to the 'do.

We’ve done the coloured gradient on so many Adventures before that I won’t go into detail on it, but you can see how it’s done in the video.

Once the bottom layer was coloured I covered it over with sheets of foil to stop the yellow being tainted and secured each piece of foil with a clip. I then repeated the first step with another section of hair, brushing the dye directly onto the foil.

Dyeing the first section.

None

Once all the hair was covered we left the dye to soak in for around 30-40 minutes. You can leave these dyes on longer as long as you don’t allow it to dry out. We were short on time though, and for this reason I ended up cutting his hair after colouring. Not recommended when you have coloured tips but we expected only to have time to dye and not cut.

I’m pretty happy with how this turned out!

Before a haircut.

After cutting with messy styling.
