Making Dreads (Back Combing Method)

Mon 26 November 2007

Making dreads can be a lot easier than you'd think.

All you'll need is patience, a comb (preferably metal since the plastic ones tend to break - if they don't you're dreads are too loose), hair and a friend or two to help if desired.

Part your hair into sections. Start working on one section, picking out small chunks of hair - it's up to you what size of chunks you pick, but remember; the bigger the chunks the thicker the dreads. And the thicker the dreads the more length you lose. I also find the skinnier dreads to look better and be easier to make.

Then, just back-comb each chunk, as you roll it back and forth between your fingertips.
Not rolling it will result in a pretty flat and not especially good looking dread, that won't last.
Also, rolling to one side only will make the dread weird and loose.

Be careful to back-comb real tight, the dreads will look nicer and last longer :)

The technique might be hard to get at first but you'll get it pretty fast.

The secret behind this method is you can make random little dreads all over the place, and you won't have to make them all at once.

F. ex. you can make five dreads each night, the half-dreaded look is easy to pull off. And, after a week or two you'll be done!

Making them all at once will make you hate the dreads before you're done making them. It's the most boring thing ever.

You can vary on the sizes of the dreads as well, to add a little bit of variation.

Dreads stay longer in dry hair. Bleached or damaged hair is perfect.

A good dreading shampoo is not essential, but it's smart. I used the shampoo from DreadHeadHQ, and I loved it.
Dreading shampoo won't make dreads for you, but it'll rinse the hair free from all residues and oils, leaving the hair fresh and perfect for dreads :)
It also works wonders on a simple back-combed big-hair look!

Another thing I also found is not to wash it for about 10 days after even though its all fluffy and big. I've had my dreads for a good 6-7 months now and used lots of products and tried different things on problems I've come across so happy to share tips for any questions."
