Ok so I REALLY want to dye my hair. My parents say its perfectly fine. but the problem is I want a hair style thats black mainly but the tips are blue. I have no idea how to go about dying my hair. I would talk to my hair dresser, but since black people don't generally get the hairstyle I'm just itching to have, she will b hesitant to do it for me. Can someone please give me some sort of resources, or hair dyeing 101. The would be realllyyyyyyy helpful!

Peace~
~Isabella~
p.s. my hair is like most black people's hair is, really really dark brown...but not quite black

There are a lot of black people who color/bleach their hair. You will want to use the lowest "volume" of developer possible. In your case, I would talk to a professional and have them assess your hair's condition. I know that coarser textured hair can be prone to breakage and dryness and if you've been processing it (i.e. straightening through heat or chemical relaxers), it could be more tricky. That being said, if you are looking for a black/blue look, you could follow the guidelines for doing the tips of hair. There's an article on it under dying techniques.

You could also try bleaching only the tips or whatever streaks you want in your hair and then using a semi or demi-permanent black on the length of the hair. It would be a lot less damaging and I don't see any need to use a permanent hair color on already dark hair.

Alternately, you could try glam strips or create your own extension strips using synth or real human hair. That way you wouldn't damage your hair and could try out the look with no commitment.

Well my hair already has a relaxer on it. so it is very straight and not coarse at all...or frizzy. i dont know if that makes a difference though.

If your hair is in good condition, you should be okay to bleach it. If you are willing to do a darker blue, you will not have to bleach it as long as if you were trying to use a lighter blue. You will need to check the directions on any chemicals you've used and cross reference with the bleach/developer. I believer there's a certain amount of time you need to wait after relaxing hair before you can color. If in doubt, I'd check with a professional. As always, do a strand test. Better to ruin a section of hair than your whole head.

You're going to have to bleach the bottom parts...since your hair is already relaxed, it is prone to breakage, but since its the bottom it shouldn't be so bad. It'll I've used Dark & Lovely Jet Black Permanent Hair dye it doesn't really last forever, but it's formulated for relaxed and chemically treated hair. If you are in the states, you can find it at Walgreens Drugstore for about 6 dollars. The other way you can do your black is just by using a semipermanent black . Even if you do a darker blue, its going to show up black. I used SFX Blue Velvet on dark brown, relaxed, partially bleached hair. The dark brown looks black, the bleached parts looked black for the first 4 shampoos now have lightened up to a nice deep purple. I know how you feel about your hair lady, she gives me flack for having green hair on the first appointment I ever had with her. Just have your lady dye your hair black first, or you can do that yourself if you've got someone you can trust. Then all you have to do is ask her do bleach your tips...Its all very simple after a while. I hope you'll post a pic if you get this done :)
