Hi everyone! I am new to this forum but not new to crazy hair colouring!!

I want to bleach my hair so I can have a blank canvas to dye it pink/purple etc

What is the minimum shade of blonde that I need to bleach my hair to so I can achieve bright/medium tones of colour?

At the moment my hair is a dark purple. I coloured it last night but it is not as vibrant as I want. I did a strand test using 20% vol bleach for 40mins and it lifted to a dark blonde/light brown colour. I am sure if i used 30 or 40% for a shorter time it would lift lighter whilst keeping condition

.... but is it neccessary? is light brown/dark blonde light enough for medium pink/purple shades?

any help would be appreciated!!

thanks guys

Hi Shellie, welcome to the forum

Ideally you'd lift the colour to pale blonde. Purples, particularly paler purples tend to look kind of murky on hair any darker than pale blond as the yellow tones in the hair tend to show through.

Pinks are a little bit more forgiving but will look redder on hair that's golden blond. Atomic Pink is an excellent shade for covering dark hair.

My advice would be if you can bleach your hair lighter without damaging it too much (do a strand test) then you'll be much more flexible about which colours you can use in the future.

    Hi thanks for the reply!

When I get the perfect colour what is the best conditioner to use that will make the smooth and silky but retain colour?

Any deep conditioner will make a huge difference. I use Tresemme deep conditioner (the one in a tub) when my hair is fried.

When I bleached my hair for SFX Pimpin' Purple, It came out to a yellowish blondish brown, yet the purple still covered it fine.

Yeah, Pimpin' Purple looked very good on my yellow blonde hair, just that on the parts that were a bit darker, it looks a bit dull as the initial colour faded and they started to show through. Don't know if I make sense.
