Hey I have bleached and dyed my hair bright reddish pink and I liked it.. My hair is naturally dark brown/black. I haven't been able to dye my hair since December because of my job. I get to take a few weeks off work for these concerts I am going to and now I want to dye the top of my hair light blue and have the underneath of it black. I was thinking of using a fishbowl blue or a shocking blue, but more faded or not left on too long. I want it to be a lightish blue. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this before and if they could give me some tips and instructions? I've never done this sort of thing to my hair before, i've only done my whole head. I've heard achieving the color light blue is hard to do. I know I need to bleach it, but I don't know how to get the color to turn out right. Help please!

this is the color blue i want it to be

You'll need to bleach the part of your hair that you want to be blue, to a light blond. It shouldn't be yellow because the blue will probably end up looking weird or greenish. Be careful though not to over bleach your hair, as it's already bleached.

The shade you want looks a bit pastel to me, I think to get that kind of shade you can dillute some blue dye with conditioner.

thank you so much! right now my hair is dark brown at the roots and a lighter reddish brown on the rest of the hair. The lighter reddish brown is from the last time I bleached it so it's different colors. I know, really bad lol. I dyed black over all of it like 4 months ago, but it washed out within a month. Anyway, I was thinking that color blue was a little too pastel for my skin tone and I've never tried to dye my hair any light blue let alone a pastel blue. I think I'll go with fishbowl because it's a darker light blue.. Have you done that color before? I hope it turns out alright
I really like your hair :) that is a perfect color combination.

Fishbowl is a gorgeous colour so long as it's applied to light enough hair. It might last a bit longer than a few weeks. Are you planning to dye over it again?

    Hehe thanks.

I've never tried Fishbowl myself but from what I've seen it's beautiful. Like Jude said, you should apply it to light hair. On more yellow blond hair I suppose it will look more green-ish.

Jude - yeah, it should be alright though. I'm going to dye black over it after a few washes. I'll explain to my manager that I can't dye it right away and it will only be fishbowl for a few weeks after vacation :). Do you know how long i'll have to leave the bleach on for? I bought 3 packets of bleach and have a 30 volume developer. I really want the fishbowl to be as blue as it can get and not turn out to be the green color i've seen on some people. I like the vibrant purple your hair is btw Jude.

    Battlesheep - you're welcome dear
is there anyway i can keep it on for less time or mix it with a different blue to get it to be that blue color i want? i'm noit sure how the bleach is going to do on my hair. It may turn out an orangeish yellow color

Make sure you get it really well bleached so it isn't yellow, use the strongest bleach you can find for the max amount of time.
Light blues usually do best to dye in a blue tint thats made to get your hair ready for the blue dye, they're also called toners.

If you go to a hair supply or Sally Beauty, you can get a 40 volume developer that will help bring your hair to a nice platinum. 40 vol is the best you can get without a license, but don't leave it on any longer than necessary, because it's crazy rough on scalps and roots.

MaryJane is also right that if you add a gold correcting toner, it will help to cancel out residual yellows (by adding purple/blue) and give you a better color to start dying from.

Personally the best light blue I remember getting came from thinning out a dark blue with conditioner like BattleSheep suggested. The color I usually use is After Midnight Blue from Manic Panic, but you might prefer to go with SFX.

Also, if you don't want yellow tones, lean towards more purple blues.

Lastly, separate out the two parts of hair so that you don't have to dye black onto bleached hair. Black is such a harsh color chemically, you might well lose it if you start with an intense bleaching, and besides, it'll use a lot less bleach..
