My hair is ridiculously curly and brown. It is also one of my most attractive features. Maybe I'm playing with fire here, but I'm so sick of plain old brown that I could puke, so I need advice.

I'm fickle. If I start dying it my hair will change within the month. I want to dye it a crazy color, but can't deal with the finality of bleaching it first. I was hoping I could get a blue color to stick in highlights, but from reading the articles on dying dark, non-bleached hair, it's nearly impossible.

I'm going to try fake dreadlocking it tonight, but I'd really love to get some actual color, so if anyone has any suggestions for a bleachphobic brunette that needs some cool colors, I'd appreciate it!

PS - I posted a picture, it's got a dark background and I have dark hair, so I don't know how well you'll be able to see it, but that's what it looks like naturally.

I know you can't really see it, but that's my hair's length and color. Sorry, it was the best picture I had.

Some of the colors(darker) work well on unbleached hair. I say go for it, though. The results are beautiful, and especially if you do a darker color, you don't have to bleach your hair to a pale, pale blonde. Try Atomic Pink...it's lovely. Or one of the wilder SFX Reds, like Nuclear Red. That being said, if you're apprehensive, try the semi perm color without bleaching. You'll probably get hooked on it!

I don't think Atomic Pink or Nuclear Red is going to show up on hair that dark.
This article can give you a better idea of dying unbleached hair:

But another suggestion I have are clip-on extensions like these:

    No bleaching and no commitment.

Are you afraid of bleaching little highlights also? That could add color to your hair in a nice way if you don't want to damage all of your hair.
Depending on how dark your hair is you could dye it.

Thanks a lot, guys. I think I'm going to try out a that Nuclear Red you suggested, if it doesn't show up... then oh well, I guess.

I'll let you know how it turns out!

If you do decide you bleach your hair, and dye on top of that bleach, once you get bored of the colour you can just dye over it with a permanent brown that matches your hair colour and nobody will know that you ever did anything. Easy :D
