hi, i havent posted on here for months!
after trying every hair dye on the market i have decided to stick with very light blonde for now, but i have so much hair i can only do the front. i have a problem. the back of my hair is permanently dyed jet black to cover all the grey..i want all my hair light blonde to match the front. I cant do this myself as i have too much hair. is it possible to bleach black dyed hair to almost white? my natural hair colour is almost black and i managed to get that almost white myself any advice?

edit..i found this on google, the cut and colour is amazing is it possible?

It's going to be pretty hard. Here's an example of what you might have to do.
    Strip the black.
    Bleach the stripped hair.
Touch up bleach to get rid of dark spots.
    Blond dye/toner all over.

Keeping in mind that most permanents lighten your hair before they colour (even the black ones) your hair has probably been through a lot. Greys tend to be a bit drier so might not stand up to the bleaching as much. So expect quite a lot of damage. I don't know about you but the hair on the back of my head gets pretty damaged just from sleeping on it, sitting on chairs, leaning against stuff etc. so you'll need to take extra care of it.

That said it's not impossible but I would recommend you do a lot of strand tests to determine the end result and colour.
The good thing about the cut in the above picture is that it has some short layers, about 6-8 inches long - just the right length to hide broken off hair

well i've been bleaching my fringe for months now, still in great condition (prob about 25 times) but it just will not go above light blonde. i want it like the pic above. so @ present its very light yellow blonde, i have bought 3 different toners, the one that has worked the best is a loreal one i got from sallys, a little purple circular packet which has lightened it a bit but its still not white. it wont bleach any lighter, the last 4 bleaches have had no effect (no stretchiness or breakage at all) so if bleach and toner wont work..is that it?
(i have followed the 'how to get white hair guide')

Here is the bleached hair (yes i cut off the face deliberately lol, eww! you can see how dark my normal hair is at the back just about) the actual colour is more like the bottom part, its not quite as yellow a it looks at the top.

What bleach have you been using? Is the regrowth not bleaching light enough either?

ion blue powder bleach with 40% developer cos all other bleaches only bleach to ginger. It's the pic that makes it look two tone yellow, it is all the same shade as the very bottom of the pic, very light yellow blonde.

That's odd. Eek with 40 volume peroxide & bleach and that many bleaches your hair must be made of steel or something!
Could be your mixing it incorrectly. What quantities of bleach powder and peroxide are you using? I know you said 40%, I assume you mean 40 volume?

I mix it the quantities you gave me about a year ago, 2 peroxides to one powder. Yep 40 vol.

    This is really puzzling.
See if you were using too much peroxide you'd get a really slow lightening but that's not the case.
It still looks like there's a small amount of yellow in your fringe but nothing too bad. I'd be able to get a better idea if you could get a pic in out doors (but not in full sunlight)?

For that cool blond shade you'll probably do well to use a permanent. Some of them are pretty good at cancelling out unwanted tones so I'd give that a try before bleaching again.

Yes it's lightening very fast when i do the roots (approx 25 mins from black to gingery blonde, then I do them again to get to blonde blonde) I will put a pic up later today. Can you recommend a permanent which is non-yellowy at all? There's so many blonde ones, lots which say 'ash' or 'champagne' but they never turn out like the (computer made, grr!) pics on the box.

I use professional dyes for that. Swarzkopf Igora Royal make several shades of platinum.
