About 2 weeks ago I asked my trainers at work wether dreads would in no uncertain terms get me booted out of my (fairly) new job. they said word to the effect of, "What? Dreads? Quite a few people here have had them, I rember this one girl who had long white ones...*then they started reminiscing*

Indide I was jumping, ive wanted dreads sine I was 15. Im nearly 23 now. Thats a long wait. Whats stopped me? Misinformation from salaons. Personal doubt. Employment. Being too busy at college/university.

Well now Im a graduate, with a job so It felt right. Especailly as its (a rather wet) summer.

About a year ago I had 3 dreads. they were ripped and twisted and in the back of my neck. I disliked them immesnly so tipped conditioner on them. My heart felt all wobbly when I wasdoing them, "God, what am i doing to my hair!?" So it didnt happen.

Yesterday morningiw oke up. Posted a guitar I sold on ebay and, well sectioned off my hair. Then I just started dreaing. I was abit nervous as even the most hardy musician will tell you. "If you dont feel nervous, just a bit playing. Somethings wrong."

Then I stopped and decided I needed help. Cue the single most patient friend ever, she helped me do the back, tighten them up, and made me violet tea when I felt like crap. We finished and we made croissants. And thats how I got dreads.

    And Now, PHOTOS!

Wash your hair in a non residue shampoo.

Section off the back, These will be BIG and chunky dreads.

Sectioning at the top. Trying to achieve a "Brickwork" pattern so my dread lie nicely with each other.

    Like so...

Finished sectioning. The back dreads will be thicker than the front because Im silly like that.

I backcombed these 4, they looked too loose so I did them over again.

theyre nice and tight cant see no light through these suckers.

Each dread took about 15 minutes to do. I dont do things half assedly. theyre solid!

About 7 hours later, only 6 to go...

    FINISHED!!

    Zooom zoooom!

    checking they look good...

Here they are about 5 minutes ago. on a lovely sunny morning.

I am so pleased. Roll on bumps, loops, fuzzy hair, undreaded roots, shrinkage and all the other dread related teething problems. Im ready for ya!

Heres to the next few years, may they be knotty and blonde.

(ps Theres lots more photos on HWO I did it but im working on a photo guide :P. Feel free to take a peek here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/spandorexxa/sets/72157601066664597/ )

Yay!! I'm glad you finally got them! They look really good!

I helped my friend put dreads in her hair once. The next morning when we woke up her mom came in there and told her she looked like a hobo. She's Japanese so it was more like "You look-a like a hobo" and as you can image, that much funnier They looked really good though.. It was a shame she had to take them out the next day

"Please excuse her for the day, its just the way the medication makes her..."

    Hurray for dreads!
They're looking really good. How much length did you loose by dreading?

I dont think dreading shrank my hair much, maybe an inch, max?

The "shrinkage" is yet to come... They'll probably shrink to shoulder length in 8/9 months or so. I hope they do. Its like having a haircut without having a haircut... if you see what I mean...

Thanks for the nice comments everyone - I just had my first day at work and so far so good. Despite work unoficially giving me the OK Im still nervous. So been wearing them in a big bun.

Mind you I got loads of compliments, thanksfully its pretty openminded where I work.. heres hope when my boss sees me tomorrow he's as forgiving!!

    Looking good!!

My boyfriend had dreads for a few weeks once. Until his nan came round and didn't recognise him and made him sit down whilst she combed them out with fairy liquid. Ouch! His nan's word is the law. She's the only person he'll take direction from.

He's asked me to make him some out of some synthetic hair I bought a while ago now tho.
