I think that LaRiche Directions Ebony is technically purple based, but I've never tried it or seen it used before, so I can't tell you just how purple it is.

It is defiantely possible to mix one up, though, if you want; I have done it before. I used Clairol Colour Compliments black and purple mixed about 50/50. It wasn't actually all that purple, more of a very subtle sheen that lasted a week or two. But that was a demi-perminant colour and lasted a month or two before I bleached it out. If you want semi-perm, you could use Directions Ebony mixed with Plum or Violet to get it more purpley, or mix Special Effects Deep Purple [which on its own starts off almost black] with some sort of veggie based semi-perm black dye.

hey, my friend just used directions ebony on her bleached blonde hair, and it turned green with one wash. dont know if that happens to everyone, but just a warning.

even tho its green, its a nice peacock green. so doesn't look too bad.

I've heard of that happeneing going from bleach blonde to black and winding up fading to green. I think it has to do with the yellow tones in bleached hair and how poreous it is. It also happens when you use 'ash' tones of professional colors after you've been blonde and try to go darker. Using a neutral based black, more of a brown based on, can help in avoidig it.

Back to the violet black thing, I LOVE the Clairol Complements line. Like Cyndee said, it won't be truly purple but there should be some really nice undertones especially when you're in the sun. I used it when I was red (with a red enhancer so it was super naturalish red) then when I went to my current off black (and now the bleach kit too, lol) - it took about 3 applications to get the color to really stick over the red, but now its not fading at all but still was easily stripped out in the spots I bleached the other day.

My friend dyed his hair red and after that he dyed over it with a blue black and it turned a purpley-black. So, yes it's possible, even if you have to take the long way around

Here's some pictures of his results.
