ok my hair is thick, which i hate already.

but there's nothing worse than buying hair dye that's really thick and then trying to get it all on my hair. it's not even that long really, which helps. but still...

the last time this caused problems was when i used SFX's ruby red. not only did it come out practically pink, it took me two hours to put it over my bleached blond hair. needless to say that was not a pleasant experience.

i bought some rubine from directions by la riche. and i opened it today with great sadness to see how thick it is.

is there anything i can do to make this easier or should i just go ahead and get my hair thinned? i'm up for anything at this point so i'm not going to complain if i have to thin it out.

and i will be stripping the color massacre that's in my hair right now. i've learned my lesson about semi-permanent dyes x.x

You could try mixing in some relatively thin conditioner. Rubine is pretty dark, so you should be able to do this without changing the colour too much. Just make sure to only use as much as you need to thin out the dye a bit; for instance, if the colour of the dye is visibly changing, you've obviously diluted it too much.

Also, how are you applying the dye? (i.e. Do you have a system, or is it just sort of haphazard? Do you have a tint brush, or do you just use gloved hands?) This can also effect how easy it is to apply. In my expirience, applying dye at the part with a tint brush, then parting out a thin piece, apply the dye at that part, and so on and so forth until all the roots are done, then applying to the length in sections is the fastest and easiest way to do it. And in my expirience with thick hair, a cheap, wide toothed comb can work miracles in making the dying process quicker and easier. If you're already doing something similar, do you have friend who's got some expirience with hair dye? Sometimes having someone else do it goes faster and can be easier since they've got easier access to you head than you do.

Hope this somewhat helps.

Directions is thick but it's also very smooth. I've never had any problems applying it to a variety of hair types. It's a similar consistency to an intensive conditioner - looks thick but spreads easily.

Add a bit of conditioner to the dye can thin it out. But it may dilute the color depending on how much you use. Maybe get a shade darker and add conditioner to thin it out and turn into a color you want! Good luck =)

I agree with CyndeeCyanide - try sectioning your hair more and using a tint brush. I've dyed many peoples hair that is VERY thick (and fine so its all tangley) and I never had a problem getting the dye through their hair.

well i wanted a deep ruby color, so i don't think adding conditioner would be a problem. i'll try that. and i usually have my mom do my hair. and she always uses gloved hands. but i think we have a tint brush somewhere around here. i'll probably cut my hair before as well, back to shoulder length since it'd take less dye.

as for the conditioner, i have some infusium leave in treatment. it's pretty much a spray. should i use that or the thicker tresemme stuff that i have?

I'd say try adding just a couple squirts of the leave-in treatment to the dye. Since it's thinner, you should be able to change the consistency without diluting quite as much, and therefore staying closer to the colour you want.
