Hey guys,

I'm moving to Chile in 2 weeks time, and I'll be living in a local family's house / apartment. My hair's pretty neglected at the moment so before I go I was thinking of having some nice big bright pink or purple chunks dyed in (Special Effects) and the rest done brown (close to my natural colour).

Now my worry is that I'm going to completely wreck the family's bathroom with dye coming out of my hair. Does anyone have any special tricks to avoid that?

I'll probably have about a week between dying and leaving and I physically can't wash my hair everyday because of my hair type and because I'll be camping before I leave the country!

Any suggestions / advice would be most useful!

Thanks.

If you're careful, then no. Making sure you use LOTS of water to rinse your hair seems to help keep the pigment 'separted' so it can't bond to things. personally since I wash in cold water, at the end of my shower for the rest of my body (I only get my hair a little wet during this part), I bend over and stick my head under the bathtub faucet and rinse that way. I havent' had a problem with any sort of staining. Pouring some vinegar in the water while you rinse out the bathroom would help prevent any sort of staining as well.

If it does get stained, vinegar can help get it out, or some little bleach scrubs will do the trick.

Hope you have a good time in Chile! I've always wanted to visit SA, but I've only made trips to Europe so far.

if you're rally organised (and terrified of dye leakage) you can do what my old room mate used to do when we lived in a posh appartment. It's a bit extreme (and time consuming) but it worked.

She used to get some vaseline and rub it onto the taps and areas most likely to get splashed or stained. She then just wiped it all up afterwards. She also used to roll up the white shower curtain so no dye could get onto it.

(i know this sounds extreme but we couldnt risk doing anything wrong in that place, phew!)

Things like vinyl flooring and shower curtains stain like a bitch. However a good squirt of household bleach will get rid of any dye on baths and showers. Just keep it off chrome.
Watch out for wet hairs sticking to things, they tend to leave little hair shaped marks on walls and floors.
I'd also sleep with a towel over your pillow in case of rub off.

My main problem at home is that the rubber shower hose has gradually turned reddy pink. I guess a way to avoid that would be to stick my head under the faucet rather than using the showerhead... and making sure I don't lie it down in the bath to be covered in nasty pink water?

My hair's so long and curly (bottom of my back), it just covers EVERYTHING. Argh.

Thanks for the tips guys =)

Get some bathroom cleaning spray and give the surfaces a good spray before you wash/rinse. I find it makes a significant difference. And keep the water running to wash dye away before it can stick.

I don't know if it's possible to wash the dye away before it sticks. The floor of our shower is some synthetic white material, and no matter how fast I am, there are always two white silhouettes of my feet left on the floor after I rinse out my color. :)

I just use... I think it's called X14 tile cleaner. Really, it's just expensive bleach in a spray bottle.

When I dye my hair, to avoid making my bathtub all colorful, I usually just put my head under the faucet itself, and let the water pound on my head.......gets the entire process done 10x faster, and keeps mess to a minimum.
