i've not heard about tongue piercings damaging teeth before but i'm sure there are more knowledgeable people on here who can help you. i know lip piercings damage teeth and gums though

I got my tongue pierced in '03, I took it out last year though.
It's the only piercing I've regretted getting so far.
You wouldn't believe how swollen your tongue gets.
It makes speaking difficult, and eating as well.
And it's true that you can damage your teeth.
I chipped one of my molars and did a bit of damage on my incisors as well.
Because of this I switched to plastic barbells.
But for some reason my tongue would get sore after a day or so.
I'm guessing it had a reaction to the plastic because it was fine with steel.
I didn't want to damage my teeth anymore though so I finally took it out.
I rather have nice teeth than a little ball on my tongue.
So I'd really think about the pros and cons before getting your tongue pierced.

yeah i have. im not really nervous about the pain the only thing im nervous about is chipping my tteth
i already have a nice little chip on my front tooth due to chewing on a bottle cap.
but if i switch to a shorter plastic one it should be fine right?
as long as im not allergic?

but wait. can it have metal barbell and plastic balls?
or is it the barbel that causes the chipping?
i thought it would be the balls?

    Tongue piercings are generally 14g.
But your first barbell will be longer in order to accomodate swelling.
And it can cause chipping because that's what I accidently bit down on.
I took a good chunk out of my molar before I was able to switch jewelry.
Acrylic balls are definitely better than steel balls.
But not having any steel is even safer.

A good piercist will run a non-metal bar through an autoclave if you really wish to have plastic in from the get-go. However many good piercers have also advised me against plastic on tounge piercings are they get alot of people biting the end off, swalling it in their sleep and waking up with no more piercing.

That said, I've wanted mine done for a while but am not yet confident my body will accept it so I'm still waiting for the right time. I would probably go for plastic of some sort rather than metal.

And yes plastic stems, metal stems, plastic balls, metal balls, all interchangable providing you get the same guage.

Ah, an imformative post to balance out against one of my useless ones

so i could have a metal barbell but plastic balls?
    cool

but back to another question that im still confused about....
do the balls cause the chipping or the barbell?

    Both can cause chipping.
I think the barbell did most of my damage actually.
