What would YOU say if the funeral director or lawyer or school principal had crazy colored hair, but still acted professionally? What about tattoos? Piercings? I agree that professionalism is key, but I would argue that your conduct is most important. Yeah, I'm not sure I'd want say, my defense attorney, to show up to a hearing in Birkenstocks & dreadlocks, but a three piece suit and neatly done dreads? Sure, why not?
I had an old roomate that was an executive for Harley Davidson. She looked very conservative when she went to work, but she was anything but. She was literally covered with tattoos, and her boyfriend, another high ranking HD exec, was fully tattooed (all but his hands, feet, and face). So, while I'll agree that some professions will not accept someone with bod mods or a wild hair color, it's a cultural thing. I'd argue that none of those things matter if the person can do their job.
There's even been cases of women suing their employer for FORCING them to comply to cultural standards and wear makeup at work. Because the same employer forced men to shave and not wear facial hair, it was deemed that the standards were "equivalent". So employers can make their own rules, but I can disagree with them. I personally would not work for a company that forced people to wear makeup. Dress codes I can do, I'll comply reasonably with standards for grooming, but as for makeup, I wear it when I feel like it. That's it.
I sincerely feel that some of the standards set by employers are really behind the times. Employers are seeing that and slowly changing. Now, I'm not saying that there is going to be a ton of pierced, tattooed, mohawk sporting tax attorneys, but really why should anyone care? Does he get you your deductions?
