Short hair + styling wax, fluff up = done.

Well with longer hair (if you could post a picture that would be great) you're going to struggle with a "bed head" style.

It lends itself to hair 1-5 inches long in my opinion. How long is your hair?

I think Murray's pomade would work for this style (and it's cheaper than Tigi's products). About $3.99 for a big tub of wax. It makes the spikies like crazy, but in a different way than gel. It's hell to get out of your hair, though. You only use a little bit (dime size), get it warm between your palms, rub it in. When I use it, I normally go a few days without washing my hair and then only add a small amount more the next day (if any at all). Using a bit of gel (cheap kind) in your hair can also help to soften it up when the residue gets a bit gross.

A razor cut style will make this easier (and "piecier" like the stylists say) than your current cut. There is a lot of "weight" around the front. You might want to trim the hair on your nape (neck), too, since they seem to curl up (just like mine do when they get a bit long).

There's kind of an art to using Murray's. You need to work it into your hair gradually. Less is definitely more, too! Use the smallest amount you can (dime sized or less), work it in your hands (it's sticky & gooey, so this can take a while), and then use your fingers to pull the hair up & out. Takes some getting used to. My little avatar pic shows me with a Murray's 'do. A coworker commented that it gave me "yugioh" hair (very UP & spiky).

I've always found that days 2 and 3 with Murrays are less of a challenge. You can wet your hair a bit, towel dry then use a blow dryer to finish drying your hair. Then add a bit more wax to finish your style.

The directions on the package are intended for African/nappy hair, not straight/caucasian hair, just so you know.

I've also found that wearing a bandana/do rag on my head at night keeps the Murray's off my pillowcases (and the pet hair out of MY hair).

Good luck with it. That tin you bought should last a good long time.

I've never used Dax, but you could certainly try it. Tell us how it works for sure, since Dax is readily available here. I usually try to get the Murrays worked all through my hair, but with the look you're going for, you might want to start to apply to certain sections and then build it up if you need more. It's a bit of a mess and won't come off of your hands unless you rub it off with a towel!

This site has some threads on old fashioned pomades -- it's geared towards 1930s style afficienados --
http://www.thefedoralounge.com/. They're in General Attire. It doesn't seem like the site allows for searching. It came up in a search about Layrite (another pomade - modern) and I thought you might like it.
