Achieving Silver!
Wed 11 July 2007
Alright, so this seems to be a pretty hot topic on the forum, and I decided to take a stab at it. Since there is supposedly no silver or white dyes on the market, I made my own blue-purple base toner using Special Effects Blue Velvet(a purple based blue) and Suave clarifying conditioner, to cancel out my yellow/orange tinted hair.
MAKING THE TONER: I started off by mixing a tiny amount of the blue dye with a lot of conditioner. This dye was VERY dark to begin with, so to make a difference I ended up using a LOT of conditioner to lighten it up. The dye looked like this after the initial mixing, although it was a bit darker after I mixed more of the ingredients so I could get full coverage.
Make sure you do a test strand before you put this stuff all over your head, as it may be too light or dark for your own preference!
BLEACHING: I mixed a 30volume developer with the bleach for my brown roots and left that in for 45-50 minutes, leaving them a nice white. After that I went through the orange parts of my hair with a 20 volume (I was very careless and rushed, and failed to get a good lift of color). TAKE YOUR TIME GETTING OUT ANY BRIGHT YELLOW AND ORANGE!!! This is VERY important if you don't want your hair to look like total crap after dying it.
DYING THE HAIR: This was the easiest part, though getting good coverage proved to be difficult. I would have preferred using a tint brush, but the mix simply refused to spread so I resolved to just scrubbing it in with my fingers. I left the color in for only 10-15 minutes before rinsing it out.

Comparing the dying process picture with what my bleached hair looked like, you can see that there must be nothing obviously ORANGE in your hair. Nor can there be anything bight YELLOW. Don't confuse this with the regular pale yellow of bleached hair. You can tell there is a distinct difference between these colors in this photo:
Don't be discouraged if it doesn't turn out exactly how you hoped it would at first. Your hair should be light enough so that the color will fade quickly anyway. This is definitely a trial-and-error color, but even if you don't consider it perfect, there's probably plenty of people that will admire your hair just the same!
Good luck to all you Hair-Crazy members out there!
